APABA Applauds Nomination of Goodwin H. Liu
to the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit

LOS ANGELES – Today, President Barack Obama nominated University of California Berkeley School of Law Associate Dean and Professor Goodwin H. Liu to serve on the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Professor Liu’s nomination is truly historic for the Asian Pacific American community. Although there are approximately 175 active federal appellate court judges, currently there are no Asian Pacific Americans serving on the court of appeals. If confirmed, he will only be the fifth Asian Pacific American federal appellate court judge in the history of the United States. Along with Denny Chin, nominee to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, he is the second Asian Pacific American nominated to the federal court of appeals by the President.

“APABA strongly believes that Professor Liu is exceptionally qualified and will make an excellent addition to the Ninth Circuit, where there are currently no Asian Pacific Americans serving.” said Karin Wang, President of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association (APABA) of Los Angeles. “Whether working as a public servant, private lawyer, or law professor, Professor Liu has always earned the respect of his peers for his superior intellect and fair-mindedness.”

Bryant Yang, APABA board member and co-chair of the Public Appointments Committee added, "As a former Berkeley Law student, I know firsthand that Professor Liu’s knowledge and understanding of Constitutional law are unparalleled. In addition to his sharp intellect, he has a passion for teaching and mentoring and a genuine compassion for others – traits that will make him a fantastic judge on the Ninth Circuit and benefit the federal judiciary as a whole.”

Professor Liu was born to Taiwanese immigrant parents in Augusta, Georgia and grew up in Clewiston, Florida and Sacramento, California. Professor Liu went on to study at Stanford University and Oxford University before attending Yale Law School. Staying close to his roots in California, Professor Liu is now a well-esteemed professor and Associate Dean at the University of California Berkeley School of Law.

Professor Liu will bring outstanding intellect and integrity to the Ninth Circuit. Professor Liu is a former clerk to the Honorable David S. Tatel (D.C. Cir) and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Sup. Ct) and is a nationally recognized scholar in the areas of education and constitutional law. He has earned bipartisan praise for his work, including from Republicans such as Clint Bolick and Tom Campbell. Professor Liu’s warm collegiality has also made him one of the most popular teachers at UC Berkeley School of Law. Before joining UC Berkeley School of Law, Professor Liu served as a Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education and was an accomplished litigator in private practice in Washington, D.C. He has been exceedingly active with numerous community and law-related organizations. His service to the community has been recognized through several awards, including the Pacific Islander, Asian, and Native American Law Students Association Alumni Award (Yale Law School); Asian American Alumni Award (Stanford University); and the Stanford Associates Governors’ Award for Exemplary Volunteer Service.

APABA congratulates Professor Liu on his historic nomination. APABA also thanks President Obama for nominating him and praises Senators Feinstein and Boxer for their support of Professor Liu’s nomination.

APALSA Joins APABA in Celebrating Judge Jacqueline Nguyen's Nomination to the U.S. District Court!

Today, President Obama nominated Judge Jacqueline Nguyen to a United States District Court judgeship in the Central District of California.

Judge Nguyen is currently a Superior Court Judge for the County of Los Angeles, a position to which she was appointed in August 2002. She was the first Vietnamese American woman ever to achieve that distinction.

Judge Nguyen received her undergraduate degree from Occidental College in 1987 and her law degree from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1991. From 1991 to 1995, Nguyen worked in private practice where she specialized in civil litigation. From 1995 until August 2002, Nguyen was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Central District of California. During her tenure in that office, she served as Deputy Chief of the General Crimes Section. Judge Nguyen was rated well-qualified by the ABA.

Judge Nguyen served as APABA’s second president, during the 1999-2000 term, and is a current member of the APABA's Advisory Board. If confirmed, Judge Nguyen would be the nation’s first-ever Vietnamese American to serve as an Article III judge. She also would be the third-ever APA female Article III judge in the United States, and the first-ever APA woman to serve as an Article III judge in California.

Speakers will give helpful advice on how to outline for your first year classes. Receive some great tips on preparing for your exams! The presenters will be providing their personal tips on how to do well in the class as well as the exams. They are also mostly from the top 10% of the class and represent people from law review, moot court and law journal. A packet that will contain excerpts of most outlines and excerpts of most of the actual graded essay exam (with a cut sheet) of the presenter for the class they will be speaking on will be provided. This event is hosted by APALSA.

Free for members/ $10 for non-members

(You will receive a packet of sample outlines and exams)

Lunch and snacks are provided.

Description: The President is responsible for overseeing and managing all APALSA-related affairs. The President acts as head of the Board, sits on the SBA President’s Council with leaders of all other student organizations, and is the main representative between APALSA and all other outside entities. He or she is charged with communicating regularly with Southwestern’s faculty, staff, and administrators, and to advocate to them on behalf of APALSA for the purpose of obtaining monetary and non-monetary resources and privileges.

VICE PRESIDENT

Description: The Vice President is charged with assisting the President in carrying out the executive functions, and to act as President in his or her absence. The Vice President is also responsible for such community service projects as the New Village Charter School donation and drive.

Description: The Secretary is responsible for keeping and maintaining comprehensive records, including current membership and mailing lists, and disseminating information to members therefrom. He or she is also responsible for recording minutes at each Board meeting, and preparing these minutes for presentation and approval at the following meeting.

Description: The Treasurer is responsible for the collection, disbursement, and accounting of all funds, including dues. This includes the oversight of all of APALSA’s expenditures and keeping accurate financial records of all accounts.

SOCIAL CHAIR

Description: The Social Chair is charged with organizing social functions for APALSA members, between APALSA and other Southwestern student organizations, and among APALSA and other law student organizations. This may include co-sponsoring bar reviews with the SBA, holding the annual bar review with the Latino Law Student Association (LLSA), and planning the bar review with the Southern California Asian Pacific American Law Student Association (SCAPALSA). He or she is also responsible for organizing the Mentor-Mentee program, and the Mentor-Mentee Mixers to be held each semester.

ACADEMIC CHAIR

Description: The Academic Chair is responsible for planning and executing the Outline and Exam Writing Workshop during the fall semester and the Moot Court Workshop during the spring semester, which involve working with the Board, the faculty advisor, and guest speakers. He or she is also charged with augmenting and maintaining the outline bank and the TWEN website.

PUBLIC RELATIONS CHAIR

Description: The Public Relations Chair is the liaison between APALSA and all other entities, including the SBA, other student organizations, and minority bar associations. Please join us for an exclusive screening of “The Slanted Screen: Asian Men in Film & Television,” a new documentary film (www.slantedscreen.com) written, directed and produced by Jeff Adachi, a Japanese-American attorney who is the elected Public Defender in San Francisco and a former president of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area.

The film, which won “best documentary” at the NY International Independent Film & Video Festival, covers nearly 100 years of cinematic history, and includes interviews with actors James Shigeta, Mako, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Dustin Nguyen and comedian Bobby Lee.

A panel discussion entitled Influencing the Image-Makers will immediately follow the screening. Philippine American Bar Association (PABA) of Los Angeles was formed in response to expressed interests in addressing the legal issues confronting the Pilipino American community, as well meeting the professional concerns of Pilipino American lawyers in Southern California. PABA sponsors community legal clinics focusing on various areas of the law and provides pro bono legal services. In addition, PABA provides continuing legal education seminars and professional development opportunities for its members, and assists Pilipino American law students through its scholarship fund and mentorship program.

Third Annual Bowling Night

What: Come join APABA for some friendly
competition as we bring a close to the summer and kick off the new school
year. Prizes will be given for the highest individual score, and the top three team scores.
